Tathagata Rakshita is said to be a native of Orissa, in Eastern India. Born in the warrior cast and physicians by profession, he went to study at Vikramashila. There he won the title of 'Mahapandita' and 'Upadhyaya'. Expert in tantras, he wrote many commentaries that he translated in Tibetan, together with the works of other masters.
