The discipline of a bodhisattva is threefold (Tib. ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་གསུམ་, tsultrim sum, Wyl. tshul khrims gsum). It consists of:
- the discipline of restraining from evil activity, (Tib. ཉེས་སྤྱོད་སྡོམ་པའི་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་, nyechö dompé tsultrim; Wyl. nyes spyod sdom pa’i tshul khrims)
- the discipline of gathering virtue, (Tib. དགེ་བའི་ཆོས་སྡུད་པའི་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་, gewé chö düpé tsultrim; Wyl. dge ba'i chos dud kyi tshul khrims) and
- the discipline of bringing benefit to beings (Tib. སེམས་ཅན་དོན་བྱེད་པའི་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་,semchen dön jépé tsultrim; Wyl. sems can don byed kyi tshul khrims).[1]
