Pith instructions (Tib. mengak; Wyl. man ngag; Skt. upadeśa) are the most essential and practical instructions on a given topic of the teachings, often transmitted orally. In the Vajrayana, there is a common division into tantras, commentaries (Skt. agama) and pith instructions.
