The ten letters of the root mantra of Kālachakra are:
- h
- kṣh
- m
- l

- r
- y
- the visārga in kṣhaḥ, which features as the cresent below the anusvāra
- the anusvāra in haṃ
- the vowel a, which is the "life" of the consonants.
