Degyal Rinpoche was the foremost student of Dudjom Lingpa in Western Tibet, in the area of Mount Kalaish, and one of Dudjom Lingpa's thirteen principal disciples. He established the Namkha Khyung Dzong Monastery and its community of practitioners, and made Tröma Nakmo central to their practice. He achieved rainbow body at the time of his death.

Among his many disciples, were:
- Golok Serta Rinpoche
- Namkha Dorje, from Ladakh
- Rolpai Dorje, from Nangchen
- Tulku Trimé Özer, from Kham
- Yeshe Palden, from Khunu
- Pema Gepel, from Nagchu
- Getse Togden, from Getse
- Khyungtrul Rinpoche Jikme Namkhai Dorje, from Khyungpo. This learned and accomplished Bönpo teacher founded Gurugyam Monastery in Khyunglung valley, close to Mount Kailash. His Reincarnation
