Sleep (Skt. middha; Tib. གཉིད་, Wyl. gnyid) — one of the fifty-one mental states defined in Abhidharma literature. According to the Compendium of Abhidharma, it belongs to the subgroup of the four variables.
Definitions
In the Khenjuk, Mipham Rinpoche says:
- Tib. གཉིད་ནི་གཉིད་ཀྱི་རྒྱུ་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་དགེ་མི་དགེ་རིགས་མི་རིགས་དུས་དུས་མིན་སོགས་ཀྱི་རྣམ་འབྱེད་མེད་པར་སྒོ་ལྔའི་ཤེས་པ་ནང་དུ་སྡུད་པར་བྱེད་པ་གཏི་མུག་གི་ཆར་གཏོགས་པ་བྱ་བ་ཤོར་བའི་རྟེན་བྱེད་པའོ།
- Sleep causes the consciousnesses of the five sense doors to be withdrawn inwardly without any discrimination as to what is virtuous or unwholesome, appropriate or inappropriate, or timely or untimely.
