Pure water is said to be endowed with eight qualities (Skt. aṣṭāṅgajala; Tib. ཡན་ལག་བརྒྱད་དང་ལྡན་པའི་ཆུ།, Wyl. yan lag brgyad dang ldan pa'i chu):
- crystal clarity,
- coolness,
- sweetness,
- lightness,
- softness;
- it is soothing to the stomach,
- free of impurities, and
- clears the throat.
