Landscape of Upper Pemakö, in Powo

Khorlo Dratsang, 'The Dharma Wheel Sangha', was the name of the tantrika sangha established by Dudjom Rinpoche in his birth place, the village of Terkong Nang, in Upper Pemakö, Powo kingdom, Southern Tibet.

Origins

Aspirations for the Dudjom lineage in Pemakö began at the time of Dudjom Lingpa, one of the greatest Dzogchen masters of the 19th century and the predecessor of Dudjom Rinpoche.

Due to numerous prophecies by Guru Rinpoche and Yeshe Tsogyal, Dudjom Lingpa aspired greatly to go to Pemakö. He once told his disciples “Now, in this degenerate age, go to the sacred land, Pemakö, those of you who rely on me. Before you young ones get there, I, the old one, will already be there.” Thus, many of Dudjom Lingpa’s students moved to Upper Pemakö, where Dudjom Rinpoche was born and where he established the Dudjom Tersar lineage, which became a main treasure lineage practised throughout the Pemakö region.

Description

During the golden age of the Dudjom Tersar lineage in Pemakö, Dudjom Rinpoche oversaw two sangha communities in Terkong Nang:

  • Khorlo Dratsang, the tantrika sangha
  • Gelong Dratsang, the ordained sangha

As a main disciple of Dudjom Rinpoche, Togden Kunzang Longrol was venerated as the head of Khorlo Dratsang.
