San Jose 1989 - At Rigpa’s invitation, His Holiness the Dalai Lama teaches in Santa Cruz and San Jose in October. The Santa Cruz public talk is given to 10,200 people. Tickets for the Dzogchen teachings sell so fast that the venue is changed at the last minute to a sports hall in San Jose that seats over 5,000. It is sold out. Four days before the Dalai Lama gave these teachings he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. These were his first public appearances since the announcements and he was greeted by standing ovations at both venues. The size of the attendance and the warmth of the reception were remarkable for this time.
