Düsum Khyenpa (1110-1193) (Tib. དུས་གསུམ་མཁྱེན་པ་, Wyl. dus gsum mkhyen pa), the First Karmapa, was born in Kham. One of Gampopa's four main disciples, he was the founder of the Karma Kagyü school and of its three main monasteries: Kampo Nenang Gön in 1164, Karma Gön in 1184, and Tsurphu Gön in 1189.
