Bandé (Pali: bhante; Skt. vanda; Tib. བན་དེ།, Wyl. ban de) is a term of respect for Buddhist monks: bandé in Tibet and Nepal, bhante in the Pali tradition. A middle-Indic word, it is said to be derived from vande, the Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit vocative form of the Sanskrit vanda, meaning praiseworthy or venerable, although bhante is said to be a contraction of the vocative bhadante, derived from a respectful salutation.
