Dampa Deshek's teachers included Phagmodrupa, the Sakya patriarch Sönam Tsemo, Dzamtön Drowé Gönpo, a disciple of Zur Shakya Senge, and the first Karmapa, Düsum Khyenpa. He founded Katok in the earth rabbit year, 1159. His extant writings include commentaries on the Sutra Gathering All Intentions (Tib. Düpa Do).

May the king of all vehicles flourish and spread,

May the lives of the holders of the teachings be secure,
ten la nö nam ming tsam tong gyur chik
May all obstructions to the teachings be eradicated entirely,
dro kun sangyé top pé gyur gyur chik
And may this aspiration be a cause for all beings attaining enlightenment.
