Shechen edition of the Longchen Nyingtik Core Texts, in 5 volumes

Longchen Nyingtik Core Texts (Tib. ཀློང་ཆེན་སྙིང་ཐིག་རྩ་པོད་, tsa pö, Wyl. klong chen snying thig rtsa pod) — the collection of all the termas belonging to the Longchen Nyingtik, or Heart Essence of the Vast Expanse cycle which were revealed by Jikmé Lingpa, along with other texts written by Jikmé Lingpa and other masters such as the the first Dodrupchen Jikme Trinle Özer, Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche.

The edition from Shechen Monastery Nepal has been compiled by Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. The first three volumes are texts taken from Jikme Lingpa's collected works, while the remaining two volumes comprise of texts not revealed or compiled by Jikme Lingpa. The first three volumes of the Shechen edition were based on the Derge edition of Jikme Lingpa's works, and the latter two were taken from various sources. For the sake of clarity some headers have been added, mostly taken from Jikme Losal Özer's catalogue.

Janet Gyatso notes that this and the following text (Dancing Moon in the Water) "were composed by Jigme Lingpa sometime between 1764 and 1767. Each text makes reference to the other, indicating that they both were revised later." (Apparitions of the Self, Appendix 1)

    • Notes: Gyatso translates the title as Key Certificate, the Heart-Mind Box (Barron as A Record of Key Points). It is the principal prophetic injunction of the Longchen Nyingtik. Gyatso writes (page 165) "Jigme Lingpa's principal prophecy comes to him during the revelation of the Longchen Nyingtig at Bodhnath. He unrolls one of the scrolls and finds that it is a prophecy, entitled Key Certificate, the Heart-Mind Box his envisioned text, a special Treasure literary genre called "certificate" (byang-bu), is critical to Jigme Lingpa's interpretation of the events of his life. It names him, refers to his psychological and spiritual attributes, predicts some of his visions and who his disciples will be, and describes the key events in the revelation of the Longchen Nyingtig. It even identifies marks in his fingerprints and teeth."

    • Colophon: This prayer of aspiration for travelling to the supreme and sacred buddha-field of Lotus Light in Ngayab Ling, no different from a natural nirmāṇakāya pure land, is known as ‘The Secret Path to the Mountain of Glory’. • Colophon: Palding Jetsün Drung, who has the great fortune of having met the profound and swift path and is diligently applying the sacred teachings and practices, sent a messenger from afar urging me to write down some quintessential pith instructions. In the past I made many mistakes by releasing the seal of these sacred words to numerous individuals who didn’t even practise and who simply plundered them. Still, I have only ever explained these things with a pure motivation. Therefore, ḍākinī Dharma custodians, I beg you to consider that and forgive me. Please clear away all errors that reduce the blessing of this Dharma and obscure the great accomplishment, transforming them into great purity! This was written at the glorious Sanctuary of Lotus Light (Pema Ö Ling).

    • Colophon: While there are many different versions of the ritual called The Fourfold Maṇḍala Offering Ritual to Tārā, the most authoritative comes from Nāgārjuna, who compiled this ritual based on The Manifest Source Tantra of Tārā. Although that version lacked a description of the deity and had words missing, I disregarded these discrepancies, added new parts from various pith instructions, and arranged the entire work into a liturgy. I, Gyalwé Nyugu Kyentsé Lha, completed this work in response to the insistent request of Jikmé Trinlé Özer of Eastern Tibet.

    • Colophon: This treasure originates from the secret scrolls of the ḍākinīs, who are the masters of the mind direct transmission of the buddhas and the sign transmission of the vidyādharas, and who are the source of blessings. It does not contradict the tantras of ground, path and fruition either in words or meaning. For gaining accomplishment, it is undeceiving. It is my, Padma’s, extraordinary teaching. May it become the Naturally Arisen Vajra’s glory! Guhya. The signs dissolve.

    • Colophon: When I, the bhusuku Khyentse Özer, was alone, engaged in the heart practice in the Flower Cave, the ḍākinīs’ assembly hall, at Omin Palgyi Chimphu, at the first rising of the moon in the Iron Dragon year, on the day of the festival that commemorates King Udrāyaṇa of Roruka inviting our teacher and reverentially offering him gifts, through the favourable condition of performing the heart-practice, combined with the pure auspicious connection of the location, while pure wisdom arose as the essence of awareness, coded signs burst forth from the secret treasury of the vast expanse of realization, appearing in the form of letters. Easy and convenient to practise, complete with all the points of profundity, this is a means to purify all impairments, breakages, misdeeds and obscurations, and to restore commitments; it has the power to dispel sudden misfortune and inauspiciousness, to fulfil wishes and aspirations, and to bring about accomplishment. Therefore, my followers should adopt this upadeśa. It is entrusted to the powerful guardians of Nyingtik. Conceal it from the unfortunate who hold wrong views. Athaṃ. Gya.

    • Colophon: Thus, this teaching on the most profound crucial points of the sādhana of the supremely noble ‘Natural Liberation of Suffering’ was spoken by the Venerable Mahāguru to the Sovereign Dharma King and the princes in [Samye's] middle-storey shrine room called Blazing Turquoise; it was placed in a casket of heart treasures, and entrusted with powerful aspirations. The time for revelation came in the Earth Tiger year (1758), when I had a vision of the Great Compassionate One, and the ḍākinī of the space of wisdom entrusted me, in the vast expanse of the illusory net, with the scrolls of the symbolic script of the radiant expanse. I wrote it down without concealing anything of the signs and meaning. Great Dharma protector Zadü Rāhula, unwaveringly protect this essence of the most profound of treasures! Samaya! I kept the seal of secrecy for seven years before I wrote it down. These instructions are more precious than my very own heart.

    • Colophon: O wonder! This extremely profound mind treasure, The Innermost Secret Practice of The Sealed Quintessence Was concealed within my heart By the primordial protector Longchenpa At the glorious Chimphu Cave of Samye. I kept the seal of secrecy for five years. But now, although in this evil time of the degenerate age Suitable disciples for whom the profound seal can be released are rare, In the year of the venomous, hostile snake, (This snake year must be the Iron Snake year of 1761 during his second three-year retreat) Within a white ceremonial tent, The wisdom ḍākinī of all-pervading space told me: “After three years have passed Three supreme heart-sons will appear—One who is courageous and bears the name of Vajra; One who is a chief among siddhas and bears the name of Jñāna; One who is skilled in poetry and bears the name of the five families. Open to them the doors of Dharma!” And thus in accordance with this prophecy, When my heart sons who uphold my spiritual lineage And the Madman of Kongpo, a hidden yogin, Urged me to do so, I released the seal of secrecy of these profound teachings. May the five Mentsün Tseringma Sisters And Wild Za ‘Razor of the Life Force’ Guard it well. Samaya. Seal. May it prove glorious for those fortunate disciples with the right karma!

    • Colophon: Once I was alone in solitary retreat in ‘The Akaniṣṭha Vajra Cave’, a hermitage blessed by the naturally arising enlightened speech of Padmasambhava, when early one morning, I caught sight of Mount Hépori and thought: “Wait…It was on that hilltop just over there that Khenpo Śāntarakṣita, the master Padma, the King and the disciples once walked, subjugated gods and ghosts, and relaxed. Many are the tales that appear to that effect. But now, apart from their names, not a single trace of them remains.” I was gripped by a conviction that in the very same way, everything is transient, impermanent. And although I had reckoned on staying alive, and not dying, for a few years more, what certainty was there that I would not leave for my next life the very next day? This train of thought filled me with haunting sorrow and aching weariness, and a sense of renunciation that was boundless. The memory of Guru Rinpoche, the King and the disciples plunged me into floods of tears. And this was why, at that moment I, Chatral Khyentsé Özer, wrote this ‘Prayer and Aspiration to Training in the Pure Realms of the Three Kāyas’: a prayer invoking and imploring Guru Rinpoche, coupled with an aspiration prayer suitable for daily recitation based on the root words of the way to attain liberation through the experiences of the bardo states.

    • Colophon: Samaya. Signs are fading. To my only son, Khyentse Özer, this was given by the Samantabhadra of awareness in the manner of a transmission of blessings and realization. Do not show it to anyone, but conceal it in your heart. Thus, in the Akaniṣṭha cave on the twenty-sixth day of the Month of Miracles, at a time when the ḍākinīs gathered during my dark retreat, I set this down on a side of precious paper. This profound aural transmission is sealed with atham. Only this! Only this! The contents are elaborated upon in The Words of the Omniscient One.
